A Members' Evening - Mike Pollard and Chris Mason will give us an update on the species they each study in the Banbury area.

Mike Pollard will give a talk on the history and future prospects for Curlews in the Banbury area.  Mike is well known to us as a committee member of the BOS and also as a trustee of Wild Oxfordshire and a lead of the Upper Thames Wader Group.

His talk with give us an update on fieldwork in 2021, including nest protection work by BOS volunteers that led to the first observed fledging of a Curlew chick in recent years.

Chris Mason will update us on his longstanding support for Swifts in and beyond Banbury.  Chris set up the Cherwell Swifts Conservation Project in 2008 to see if anything could be done to stop declining Swift numbers.  Swifts have recently been Red Listed.  From the start he had great support from the BOS and members, both practical and administratively.  In the talk he will explain how he has set about the task, mention some of the achievements and disappointments and refer to his hopes for the future.

This new paper, published on World Curlew Day on 21 April 2022, describes the current and historical status of the Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata in an area of 1200 square kilometres centred on Banbury.   Click here to link to the paper Read more ...
